ABOUT US
The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic and successful organisation with a strong focus on delivering quality care to our population of around 430,000 people. We provide a comprehensive range of secondary care services from 3 main centres, Grimsby, Goole and Scunthorpe as well as community services in North Lincolnshire.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly and caring place to work where we aim to combine our patient-first approach with innovative and creativity against a backdrop of holistic team working, as encapsulated in our vision and values – Together we care, we respect, we deliver.
The Trusts’ services are commissioned by North East Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, East Riding and Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). The CCGs work is currently supported by a Local Area Team (LAT) and Commissioning Support Unit (CSU). The Trust works in partnership with NHS Care Plus in North East Lincolnshire who provide community and social care services, Navigo and RDaSH who both provide mental health services, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust (HEY), Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Leeds Healthcare Trust who all provide tertiary services. It is at the leading edge of developments in hospital services and is committed to modernising health services for the population it serves.
The Trust’s Strategic Direction sets out the ‘general’ direction in which Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust will move for the next five years. Our core business is to:
- Deliver excellent emergency health care services.
- Deliver excellent planned health care services in line with commissioner needs.
- Provide a full range of secondary care critical care services including intensive and high dependency care.
- Ensure a full range of diagnostic services are available to our patients.
- Recognising our commitment to the concept of ‘Hospital Without Walls’ provide high quality services outside the hospital setting, possibly including non-standard primary care services.
THE SERVICES:
Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital Grimsby are both well-equipped district general hospitals with A&E, Maternity and Obstetrics, Acute Medicine and Acute Surgery (including Orthopaedics) and Adult and Neonatal Intensive care on both sites. There are well equipped support facilities including a digital radiology PACS system throughout the Trust including MRI and 24hr CT at both sites. Isotope studies are performed at Grimsby including Hologic DEXA scanner. Basic EMG and nerve conduction studies are done within the Trust as are lung function studies, cardiac catheterisation and pacemaker implants.
Goole District Hospital is a smaller hospital with outpatient facilities, midwife led maternity unit, a minor injuries unit and in-patient wards for non-acute medicine. It is also a site which performs day case and in-patient surgical procedures for orthopaedics, general surgery, Gynaecology and Ophthalmology for a large geographic area. The hospital has X-ray facilities linked to the Trust PACS system. There is an Acquired Brain Injury Unit which is run by the ABI charity.
The Trust provides Community Services in North Lincolnshire. There are 5 Locality teams comprising District Nurses, Therapists, Social Workers and support staff who work with GPs, mental health, voluntary services and the hospital to provide care for adults in the community. EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust will act fairly at all times for our patients, public and employees and this means treating people fairly, providing equal chances while respecting people’s differences – both in employment practices and patient care.
Equality and Diversity is about more than just meeting statutory requirements. It is fundamental in delivering fair patient services, achieving equitable employment practice and essential if we are to develop confidence in all the communities and employees we serve.
Leadership and culture is seen as being the most important aspect of the success of embedding equality in all services and the Trust is revisiting its equality scheme and action plan over the coming months in light of the new equality legislation.
HEALTH CHECK:
In our annual health check by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) we were judged ‘excellent’ for our use of resources and this has enabled us to invest in reducing waiting times for access to our services; improve the patient environment and experience; and drive further improvements in patient safety.
INVOLVING STAFF:
The strategic objectives for the Trust are based on improvement in productivity and efficiency, flexible use of resources; re-design of services including the development of alliances and partnerships with other providers to deliver redesigned services in different ways, to avoid significant rationing of healthcare and maintain viable local service provision. To support these objectives the Trust has implemented an Innovation and Improvement Programme (IIP) which takes ideas from all staff and develops them into projects to simultaneously improve both quality and efficiency.
INFECTION CONTROL:
Hospital acquired infection rates for both MRSA and Clostridium Difficile have reduced dramatically, and are now at their lowest rates ever.
CARBON EMISSIONS:
The Trust is ensuring that all services are developed to meet the carbon reduction strategy which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 10% by 2015, in line with national strategy. The Trust’s strategy considers further use of sustainable technologies in all areas of its business in order to meet its corporate citizen and carbon reduction targets. It identifies the need to reduce emissions which will be targeted under the headings of energy, procurement and food, transport and waste.
The initial targets are:
1. Energy reduction in usage by 5%
2. Procurement and food reduction in carbon by 10%
3. Transport reduction by 15%
4. Waste reduction by 10%
VISION:
The Trust’s vision is to provide the very best accessible healthcare and to constantly improve what we do.
The Trust’s core business is to provide a range of high quality clinical services that is financially viable and which together allow us to deliver a broadly comprehensive range of emergency services to our local populations.
To do this, and for our services to be sustainable, we also need to deliver a range of elective services which are required by commissioners, and which allow us to maintain the critical mass necessary for those emergency services to remain viable.
Some of these services may need to be delivered in traditional hospital settings, with links to specialist tertiary centres where required; others may be delivered in community settings. Our aim is to work with commissioners to ensure all services are developed with a focus on keeping people well.
To do this we will develop alliances and partnerships with other providers to deliver re-designed services in different ways where appropriate or to secure appropriate facilities and support services for the delivery of integrated services, recognising that location of service delivery will be a variable and therefore kept under constant review.
Local services for local people continues to be our focus. We will however consider extending services beyond our current perimeters when to do so is viable and beneficial for NLaGFT, meets commissioner needs and will not compromise our local services.
